Public transport is the key to a better-connected Christchurch.
Without intervention, we are looking at a staggering 20% increase in vehicle kilometres travelled by 2030 compared to 2020. This surge in traffic will lead to significant delays and congestion, particularly in hotspot areas like Brougham Street, Blenheim and Riccarton Road, and Moorhouse Avenue.
It will also help to reduce the likelihood of congestion occurring in other urban centres across Greater Christchurch such as Rangiora and Rolleston. Such congestion will impact all aspects of city life, from work commutes to leisure outings and freight logistics.
Fortunately, market research indicates a strong appetite for public transport, with 77% of Greater Christchurch residents either currently using or open to using public transport. Currently, over 40% of residents are regular or occasional users—a testament to the untapped potential of our public transport system.
The rollout of the PT Futures programme will bring tangible improvements across the network. Public transport users can look forward to faster, more reliable journeys, enhancing the appeal of public transport as a preferred mode of travel.
As a result, we will alleviate congestion on the roads, ensuring smoother, more efficient journeys for all traffic.
